How to calculate fence materials
Divide the non-gate fence length by the maximum post spacing and round up for structural sections. A straight run needs one more line post than sections; each gate is treated as replacing one opening and requiring two dedicated gate posts.
Fence formula
Line sections = non-gate length ÷ post spacing, rounded up. Estimated posts equal line sections + 1 + two posts per gate. Panels equal non-gate length ÷ panel width, rounded up.
Worked example
A 100-foot run with one 4-foot gate leaves 96 feet of fence. At 8-foot spacing, it uses 12 line sections, 13 line posts, and 2 gate posts: 15 posts total. Twelve 8-foot panels cover the non-gate length.
Practical tips
- Mark corners, ends, grade changes, and gates before setting a uniform spacing.
- Confirm local setback, permit, height, and utility-location requirements.
- Gate posts often need larger dimensions or deeper footings than line posts.
