How to calculate pavers
Divide project area by the face area of one paver, then add waste for cuts, breakage, and pattern alignment. Measurements are converted to square feet before division.
Paver formula
Pavers needed = project area ÷ paver face area. Recommended quantity equals the base quantity × (1 + waste), rounded up.
Worked example
A 15 × 12 foot patio is 180 square feet. An 8 × 4 inch paver covers 0.222 square foot, so 810 pavers cover the exact area and 891 include 10% waste.
Practical tips
- Use actual face dimensions and confirm manufacturer coverage.
- Curves, diagonal patterns, borders, and mixed sizes generally increase waste.
- Estimate gravel base, bedding sand, joint material, and edging separately.
Assumptions and limitations
The estimate ignores joint width and assumes one paver size covers the full area. Small joint differences are usually absorbed by the waste allowance.
